8 WAS IN THE COMMUNITY

.........................................................................................

The Wiltshire Astronomical Society holds a number of events in the local community to popularise astronomy.

8 School Links

The Sheldon School meetings continue. We are also in contact with other schools (Malmesbury and George Ward, Melksham) and are happy to arrange speaking or viewing evenings at schools in the area. Contact Andy Burns for more info.

8 BBC Radio Wiltshire

This is now in a recorded format during the morning show in Wiltshire, but
any questions can be asked and will be used in the show. Meanwhile we will
be asked to comment on all upcoming (and newsworthy happenings) as they
occur. These go out to all regions around Wiltshire.

8 Community Links and Public Outreach:

We are happy to give talks to other groups and societies within the region,
from Scouts and Cubs through WI and Civic societies to Business clubs. Specialist areas include all aspects of visual astronomy, telescope setups, solar onserving and imaging, astro-photography and satellite observing.

8 Light Pollution.

Andy Burns is currently the Wiltshire contact for the Campaign for Dark Skies.

8 WAS Summer BBQ 2008

The summer 08 BBQ will be announced nearer the time. Watch out for other events organised by the society which will be featured on this page. Our Summer trip this year will be to Herstmonceux Observatory Science Centre, and our Spring outing to the Norman Lockyer Observatory.

8 William Herschel Museum

Andy Burns is now involved with the Museum in Bath. A superb local historical site to visit, being the location where the planet Uranus was discovered in 1781. Contact the Museum for more information. 2008-2009 will see a major overhaul of the museum as part of the International Year of Astronomy.
